CHAPTER 5

Describing my mother as a battleaxe was an insult to battleaxes everywhere. She was hatchet-faced, with zero sense of humor, and literally did nothing but think about money all day. Of her children's and husband's happiness, I had never seen one sign of concern.

I admitted to myself now as I got ready to see my mother again that my former fiancée had basically been the same kind of woman. Thank God I had escaped that hell in time. And now found Alanna, the joy of my life.

Fairy folk powers were inherited, and not always parent to child, but grandparent to grandchild. My mother had been furious about being 'cheated', not getting 'the gift' herself. She'd resented me like hell for it having been bestowed upon me instead.

Mother had tried to control me from the minute the powers had manifested themselves. I recalled that day as though it was yesterday, though it had been nearly 20 years ago.

I'd been about nine, with eight siblings at that point. Times had been tough, and no mistaking it. There was always hunger. Winter brought with it shivering cold as well as the near-starvation.

It had been dad's birthday, and while we had no money to speak of, I figured I could surprise him in some way.

I didn't dare steal the cash from the family money tin. But I COULD use my imagination, as I often did when I was alone. I would hide in my wardrobe and create whole words in the most glorious detail. Surely a birthday tea would be easy by comparison?

When I got home from school, the house was cold, dark, everyone upstairs huddled under blankets for warmth, trying to do their homework, I was sure. We certainly never had playtime except in the school yard at recess.

I pictured the most delicious meal I had ever seen, a wedding tea at the Ritz in a color magazine, and changed the white décor to pale blue for my dad.

Father had come in, looked around, and actually started to cry with delight. I'd also gotten every fireplace in the house packed with coal and lit, and filled the coal hole. There was so much hot water now, those who wanted to have a bath would be able to do so.

Father called everyone down to the dining room, but there was no sign of Mother. Needless to say, the kids were like locusts—we couldn't have held them back to wait for her even if we'd wanted to.

Besides, it was foolish to not make the most of the hot dishes, like the Welsh rarebit, steak and kidney pie I'd conjured up because I knew it was Dad's favorite, and pretty little chicken vol au vents the girls loved. They were like Heaven, melting in the mouth, then hitting the tongue with a lovely savory flavor. I'd seen them in a bakery window once, and wondered what they would be like. I got to find out. Bliss.

After the initial wolfing down, we'd settled into a more steady pace, and began to enjoy each other's company.
